Sailing as a way of life...

I did this site about the boats I have built and restored over years. Also my designs as an amateur are there showing my the boats I would like to built. The site was previously in French, but I made a completely new version in English.

So the site is sailingboat.christianlanctot.com

This site shows a great portion of my life. I have spent more than 20 years cutting, gluing and sanding in my spare time. When I look back, one thing I realize for sure: life is very short.

Please, pay a visit.

The mast is down

The mast was taking down on my sailboat yesterday. Another step before putting her to sleep for the winter. The last one will be to cover it for snow, dirt and uv. I miss sailing her already. Going out and play with water and wind. Moving magically on the water pushed and pulled by the wind alone. Daily exercises and training. Playing with friends. It all ended abruptally 2 weeks ago. Until next spring.

Storm sailing.

The Velux 5 oceans race is underway, and soon after the start, boat breaking gale force headwinds and seas, comparable to those experienced in the Rolex Sydney Hobart Race in 1998 when six lost their lives, have been battering the VELUX 5 OCEANS fleet all day.

VELUX 5 OCEANS Race Director David Adams, is a past competitor in this race gave his assessment of the conditions: “It is blowing old boots. We are getting reports into the 50 and 60s, and we have forecasts saying a minimum of 45. it is not the strength of the wind that is the worry, it is the size of the seas. With the wind you can reef down. These things [Open 60s] will still go without any sails. But the seas - particularly if they are going upwind - they just pound and pound and pound and that places terrible load on the rig, and that’s the boat breaking stuff.”

But see for yourself.

Big Etchells

A sailboat sailing is magnificent. But seeing a shinny, glossy, whiter that white Etchells hull sitting on his trailer is stunning. Realy.

Sailors smiling.

How on earth are they smiling at? Nothing, just the fun of sailing the last days of the saison on a timeless heroic sailboat: the Star.

Js9000

What about going out everyday in a fast planning with little or no crew. js9000There is one sportboat that can be sailed short handed, the js9000. This boat was designed from the ground up with the idea that the crew weight is not needed. The boat is really simple to sail with asymmetric spinnaker tacking to the bow. The boat is a very narrow easily driven hull and is 30 feet long. This makes waterline speed with moderate sailplan.

This concept is uncommun and only a few design exists and the js9000 lead the way.

Proto 2001 sailing video.

This one will be short. I have cutted down the Proto 2001 video to 320 x240. It will be more manageable for all of you viewers. But the big version is still on the server for anyone who may ask for.

Esse 850 in north america.

I am a big fan of sportboats. I mean fast planing  vessel with huge asymmetric spinnaker that propulse the sailboat like a powerboat. The hick is that these beasts always need a lot of crew to balance the boat.

But not for the Esse 850. It seems that the concept behind was to minimize to power needed by designing a slippier hull. So lesser crew. The boat is European but “Annapolis perfomance yachts” is the new importer for the states. This is good news because there is definitively a niche market for this kind of racer.
